Configuring Gmail IMAP on your phone with Airtel & Vodafone

Let me first tell you what is Push Email, you will receive email as soon a new email is received by the mail server, just like SMS. To use this service you need IMAP or POP access to your mail server & also your mail server should support anyone of them. With POP access you can download your emails to phone, but server & phone will not be in sync. For ex: if you delete a mail on your phone, it will be still there in server. IMAP is more advanced which syncs both mail boxes. Whatever you do on any place, gets reflected everywhere. Thankfully Gmail provides IMAP access for all the accounts, you have to enable it by going to “Settings–>Forwarding & POP/IMAP”. Basic GPRS plans like Airtel Live & Vodafone Live doesn’t provide IMAP access, you have to activate Airtel Mobile Office & or Vodafone Mobile Connect.

Configuring on Phone:

This configuration is for Phones which come up with inbuilt mail client, if your phone doesn’t have that try using gmail mobile app available at http://m.google.com.

Open email client on your phone, goto “Settings–>Add new email” & configure as mentioned below:

Incoming Mail Server:

Email/user ID: Your Gmail ID
Password: Gmail Password
Incoming Mail Server: imap.google.com
Mailbox name: Gmail (you can use anyting)
Mailbox Type: IMAP4
Security Ports: SSL
Port: 993 or Default in some phones

Outgoing Mail Server:

Email/user ID: Your Gmail ID
Password: Gmail Password
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.google.com
Security Ports: SSL/TSL
Port: 465 or 587 or Default in some phones

After configuration connect to your mailbox, now you wil receive emails as soon as they arrive!

Please Note: While this protocol is popular, it was not designed for paging and as such it is not time sensitive, there can be delays in the reciept of the email depending on the routing (this does not have anything to do with the software but the design of the protocol). If your carrier supports SNPP or WCTP we would suggest using those protocols if time is an issue!

If you are aware of any other free sms to email gateways please add it in comments. Also let us know whether you tried any of the above and your experience with it.

BlueWhaleMail.com - Free Email On Phone

If you have a Nokia Series 60 or Sony Ericsson Feature phone there is a new mobile application that aims to bring you a BlackBerry like email solution for free.
The world's 1.1 billion email users have phones with unusable, hard to configure in-built email that few people can be bothered to set-up.The complexity of setting up mobile applications on many phones is a great obstacle for most people, so hard work has been done to make BlueWhaleMail child's play to setup.

What’s it good for?
BlueWhaleMail is a free push email client that sends and receives email and lets you social network just like you do on your computer.Your email and social network on your phone. It also integrates your Facebook profile, so you can see your emails, Facebook updates and such all in one place.

It also notifies users of status updates and news items from Facebook, making it possible to send them a message or write on their wall in response. Like SMS, messages and notifications are displayed as soon as they are received without requiring users to manually connect to their inbox.
Your phone vibrates when you get an email, the way it does for a Text Message.
Your email is on your phone all the time - no need to log in.
And the best bit is that the software is free - network operators may charge for use of their data network.

How does it work?

The app itself works really well. To set up the Facebook section you
simply feed in your login details - the app then delivers a feed of your
friends’ status and news updates, as well as allow you to update your own
status, poke friends or send them messages or wall posts. The email
section requires a bit more info, but all we had to do to get it linked up with
our Gmail account is type in the address and password - the app took care
of the other settings automatically.
Leave the app running on your mobile (it does use a fair whack of memory,
mind you) and it’ll keep an eye on your inbox and Facebook account,
vibrating the handset when new messages appear. Everything appears in
one unified list, and there’s even a data meter to keep a track on your
kilobyte count. Basically, this’ll make a really handy addition to most
phones, and the fact that it’s free is a huge bonus.
